Broadly speaking, in 1Q18 food prices moderated following a period of significant deflation on the part of food producers and retailers. Owing to the persistence of deflation in key staple foods and lower inflation rates amongst food producers we calculated a lower cost of basic foods in 1Q18, a positive outcome for low-income consumers.
