SA Apparel market growth – April 2025

The Retailer Liaison Committee (RLC) released its Market Sales Report for April 2025. Its members’ sales accounted for 59.0% of total SA clothing sales.

Apparel, Homeware and Beauty sales 6.1% y-y in April (March: 5.6% y-y), with a 6-month rolling growth of 6.2% y-y and a 12-month rolling growth of 5.2% y-y.

Apparel and Beauty categories achieved strong sales growth during April, with the best-performing categories being Womenswear (+6.9% y-y), Menswear (+8.0% y-y) and Beauty (+7.6% y-y).

Although Homeware sales moderated to 9.8% y-y in April (March: +16.2% y-y), this category has performed consistently strongly since July 2024.

Total RLC volume growth improved marginally to 2.8% y-y in April (March: 2.7% y-y). All categories experienced growth in volumes, except for Kids & Baby, which contracted by 2.4% y-y in April.

Product inflation ticked up slightly to 3.3% in April (March: 2.9%).

The average unit price for the RLC was 20 in April (compared to R126.07 in April 2024).
