South Africa has done well to keep the new daily infections under control, reducing from the on 16 July 2020 peak of 12 584 infections, to the current rate of c. 3 000 new daily infections. However, we noted a concerning trend where the case fatality rate has been increasing since September 2020. We reviewed the infections and fatality data in more detail to find explanations for this peculiar trend in SA.
